Who we are

BSA, the South Africa governing body for basketball, is an independent association formed by provincial associations and associate members of basketball throughout the South Africa.

BSA is recognized as the sole competent authority in basketball by the SASCOC.

BSA is a non-profit making organization and, in principle, does not pursue any objective of economic character for its own gains.

The headquarters of BSA are established in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.


What we do

BSA promotes all FIBA the Official Basketball Rules, and establishes Rule and Regulations that must be applied to all South African competitions, for which BSA also establishes the system of competition.

BSA controls and governs the appointment of national referees and recommends international referees to FIBA.

BSA regulates the transfer of players from one province to another.

BSA controls and governs all South African competitions.

BSA is also the sole television rights owner in all competitions in South Africa.


Key numbers

Despite little support and activity since the 90’s, basketball stats continue to impress (extracted from BMI Sports Info 2005):

    • Participants: 430 000 adults & 370 000 juniors
    • 3.1 million TV spectators
    • 3rd played sport amongst blacks (after soccer & road running)
    • 46% female participation
    • >50% of participants are aged between 18 & 29 (youth sport)
